MAGIC BECOMES A MOTHER Magic had been restless and mooing her concern for several days. She started having contractions early afternoon. She would lie down and strain a bit and lick her foreleg. Then stand up for awhile and nibble a bit of grass before going back to work. "What is happening to me?"Then her "water breaks." The amniotic sack ruptures and the fluid rushes out. Now the clock is ticking! "What is this? The scent makes me feel strange!"After an hour or so, Magic is really getting serious. Her sister, Alley, is trying to be helpful. You can see the little front hooves protruding from Magic's vulva. I can see the baby's tongue hanging out and moving, so I know the baby is alive. I told Alley that she better be taking notes. She might be next! (She was next, about a week later!) Magic strained and pushed to get the head and shoulders deivered. A couple more good pushes and the baby popped out. In a split second Magic jumped up and turned around to see the fruit of her labor. "My Baby! My beautiful Baby!""Magic instinctively knows to lick the baby to dry her off and stimulate her circulation. The baby was up on her feet and searching for breakfast in minutes. Mother and daughter bonded for a while. Then we walked up to the barn and got inside the clean and cozy stall just before a very cold and windy rain storm. Typical March weather in the Pacific Northwest. I gave Magic a bucket of fresh warm water and some good food. ![]() "After all the warm milk I can drink, I am going to take a nap." |
