A little bull goes a long way!

In the Lowline world we like to make "little bull" jokes.
But, seriously, there are many uses for Lowline bulls. The most obvious is to have him available to service your Lowline females. However, Fullblood Lowline females are still in high demand and relatively expensive.

The percentage market is wide open. The American Lowline Registry offers and upgrade path. A person can obtain some females of another beef breed of their choice and crossbreed with a good quality Fullblood Lowline bull. The offspring can be registered as Half-bloods. These female offspring can be bred back to fullblood bulls. The second generation will then be registered as 3/4 bloods. Do this again and you can have 7/8 Lowline stock registered as Purebreds. These will never be entered as Fullboods inorder to keep the seedstock absolutely pure. This process is utilized in other livestock breeds as well. It allows the producer to track the improvements and bloodlines in the same way as if you started with all pure stock.

Lowlines are known for their "calving ease." Newborn calves are small at birth so fine boned dairy heifers can give birth easily. Using a Lowline bull on Jersey heifers is becoming a convenient and profitable option for dairy farmers. The calves grow quickly and are very marketable. There is even a name for this cross. "Jerline."

You can read about "Hershey" and see other interesting Lowline cross-breeds at Minicows West.
